About

Doctrine

I believe the Bible is the inspired word of God.
I believe in the trinity, the Father, Son & Holy Spirit. One God in three persons.
I believe Jesus, God incarnate, died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins.
I believe He died & rose again, and now sits at the Father’s right side, interceding for us.

Purpose

I believe God has given us each unique gifts and there are no two people alike. I believe our purpose is to use our gifts to glorify Him and to encourage each other. In the Bible is says we are blessed as we give.

Only Jesus is perfect and is to receive our worship. He alone is to be lifted up in our hearts and in our lives. God has raised up leaders, but they are to be servants to the body of Christ.

No one, and no thing deserves our attention as much our God who created us. That’s another Scripture. It’s just required that we walk humbly with our God.

Jean,I picked up a guitar and started practicing chords when I was about 55 years old. I am now a month short of 64. I wish I could tell you that by now I am an accomplished guitarist, but it is just the opposite. I know most of the basic chords, including the ones used for most Christian hymns which I want badly to do. I can strum and do fingerpicking but still sound awful. I tried lessons for about 3 months going once ;per week, but it didn’t really improve things, since my technique is still not very polished. I don’t know. I love the guitar, but I wonder if the Lord is telling me that maybe this is not my area of talent. I am a retired NYS civil service employee who relocated to Arizona this past April. I am a college grad and am qualified in writing and literary areas, computer skills are fair, but for some reasons, my guitar skills are troubling. I want to play only Christian music, slow hymns and ballads, and I would be happy to just learn about 10 God Glorfying songs to play. I am not interested in public playing because my skills are poor, but I do not want to give up on the guitar, because I enjoy the time spent with it. The only other thing I like more than the guitar is reading my Bible and praying to Our Lord. Thanks for any feedback or suggestions. John Flanagan

John… thanks for your comment. I see you only had lessons for three months. That’s not very long. Do you have our program? There are many suggestions there that can help your playing.

You also say that you love to play the guitar, so I don’t believe you should stop playing. It’s true that some people pick up music quicker than others, but that doesn’t mean that those who don’t pick it up as fast should quit.

I suggest, if you want to improve your playing, finding a different guitar teacher and/or getting some good guitar training programs, like ours.

    God Bless,
    Jean

Jean, would you mind if I ask a question?. Have you ever heard of an old gospel or country Christian song that has the words, ” Jesus ,stilled the troubled waters one more time” or words to that affect in the song? I have heard it once on the radio, but could never find this song listed anywhere on the internet. If you would know the chords and lyrics to this song, I would appreciate it. thanks God bless. I purchased a guitar for my son at the CHEA convention last year. He is now using it to help with worship. He is 10 years old. He would like to put steel strings on it. Is that ok?

  8. admin says:

Thanks for your comment. It is NOT a good idea to put steel strings on the guitar. It can warp the neck. Steel string guitars have a tress rod made of steel that goes up the neck. They can handle heavier tension strings. If he wants to play a steel string, he needs to get a steel string guitar.

    God Bless,
    Jean

PS. Wonderful to hear that he is already helping with worship at such a young age!!! AWESOME!!!

    Hi Jean,

Is there anything available for strumming patterns? Playing fast songs? Or having the skill to jump back and forth from slow to fast or fast to slow at any given time?
    Thanks
    L

    Les,

We carry a book with CD’s that is all strumming with contemporary worship songs – http://www.worshipguitarclass.com/praise-worship-guitar.html
As for how to play faster, that’s covered in several of our courses. Do you already own the Worship Guitar Class lessons?

    Hi Jean,

On YouTube Ken Middleton gives a lesson on how to play “There Is A Name I Love To Hear” on the acoustic guitar. The YouTube address is:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/ichthus888?blend=23&ob=5#p/u/17/eKrWMkz7a6g

The tune he plays is not the “There Is A Name I Love To Hear” that I know. Do you recognize the song he is playing? I asked Ken Middleton and he said that its what he knows that song by.

    Thanks,

Alvin, that’s a song from the 1920′s called ‘I’ll Fly Away’. It’s been recorded tons of times and sung in many churches.

Hi, everyone. This my first posting. I thought I’d see if anyone out there has a similar experience as me. I started playing guitar at 15 and took classical style lessons for about two years. My teacher taught me from Frederick Noad’s book, “Solo Guitar Playing”. I rarely played after college, and have now resumed my studies after 20 years. I started over in Noad. Since Christmas I’m about where I left off in college. I guess I’m more dedicated now.

My goal is to play hymns and my own arrangements of 70′s love songs. I found a few hymns for solo guitar, but NO 70′s love songs. Has anyone seen the music for them? Not that I’m at that level yet. I’m just now getting into 3rd position.

I now realize I know very little about music, and need to learn some theory before I can realize my dream of arranging my own stuff.

    Take care.
    Paul

  20. admin says:

Paul, we don’t carry the 70′s love songs, but you can learn about making your own arrangements of hymns from our Music Theory Course.

One of the students mentioned how much he was enjoying making his own arrangements of hymns from the ideas he learned from the course.

  21. paul says:

I have found a few guitar arrangements for hymns from various publishers, but I’m really seeking a companion to The Baptist hymnal for solo guitar. I’m no expert but I believe The Baptist Hymnal is primarily for singing. I imagine such a book would be a hot seller, so i can’t see why no one has done it yet.

The general idea is to be able to go anywhere with a guitar and the guitar hymnal.

    Paul
